One Room Challenge Week 4: Rugs, Sanding, Wallpaper, and Chair Wrapping
There was a bit of a snag in the works this week, we had the electrician scheduled to wire and hang the Moroccan Lanterns, however there was a problem finding a component to hang them which had to be ordered. Hopefully we that will happen in Week 5. The drywallers are scheduled for October 31st, so the electrical work has to be done before that.
Since the budget doesn’t have room for new dining chairs we had to get creative. I really wanted to bring in some other natural elements into the room and honestly it was bugging me how mid century our vintage dining room chairs are. While I will always love them, I’m ready for something different. We came up with the idea of wrapping the rungs of the chair with jute or cotton rope. We were a little unsure of this idea but we were fortunate to see designer Thomas Pheasant speak at Design Chicago about his new collection and wait for it… a few of his new pieces have jute wrapped sections. This gave us confidence that we were on the right track. We ordered this beautiful hand dyed cotton rope from UnfetteredCo on Etsy. We have experimented a bit and think we have a good way forward. We also ordered this striking Moroccan fabric to recover the chairs.
We began the china cabinet overhaul this week. All the hardware has been removed and the scuff sanding is complete. I’m really excited about this transformation, I found this pretty little vintage china cabinet on Facebook marketplace for $75. With a little love it will be the perfect piece, she’s going to get a coat of black paint, all the hardware is getting gold gilding wax, and because we are obsessed with the gilding wax we are going to hit one part of the top of the cabinet with it, not too much, just enough to give it a little highlight.
Rugs and Rugs and Rugs, so many rugs! We are still making rug decisions, it didn’t help that I discovered I had been shopping for the wrong size, it really needs to be a larger to cover the spread of the chairs. We narrowed down the wallpaper to two selections, we are just waiting for the wallpaper samples to get here. We were hoping they would be delivered today but that wasn’t in the cards. Next week both of those have to be chosen and ordered.
When I see everyone else’s reels, I feel we are moving at too slow of a pace but it’s good to remember every project has it’s own unique challenges and opportunities and sometimes projects move at the speed they need to instead of the speed you want them to. Next week we are aiming to have the china cabinet painted, the hardware gilded, the lantern installed, and the wallpaper and rug picked out and ordered. Thanks so much for following along with our journey. Stay tuned for week 5.
