Western Springs Georgian

When the clients first approached us about this beautiful little Georgian style home in Western Springs, they were still in the process of closing and were going to have the floors all redone before move-in. They knew they wanted something fresh to match their sense of style, love of travel, and their newly growing family. We started with the idea of a new color palette for the home- something fresh to update the space that had formerly been owned by someone with more mild and conservative taste.

As the project and our relationship with the clients evolved over the course of many months, we were able to touch the foyer, dining room, living room, upstairs landing, office, and sunroom with everything from color, to texture and pattern, to new lighting and furniture, and customized wallpapers. The transformation was really exciting to see come together as we added new layers, and added some beautiful new things to make their home uniquely their own.

How it Started

Heavy curtains and lots and lots of beige. The home, for all its space, felt closed off and the architectural elements that make the home stand out from the others on the block had been de-emphasized by the older style of decor. We knew from the clients that they had a few art pieces they really loved and souvenirs from their time traveling abroad. We worked with them to identify the colors and textures that really brought them joy.

The Concept

We started with a color palette harvested by the pieces that inspired them. We looked to blues and gentle barely-there pinks, and greens and rich golds. It was at this point that we started considering wallpapers as a nice option for their home and we began brainstorming concepts.

The Process

After color selection, our clients had the walls and ceiling painted. We chose gold for the foyer ceiling and hallway, connecting the living room, office, kitchen, and powder room. We also found a gorgeous paper from Mitchell Black and customized the print and colors to match the first-floor palette, running the wallpaper up the foyer wall, stairs, and to the second-floor landing. We got beautiful pieces from Four Hands to match new and vintage items collected by District. The client’s love for snakes led to a snake wallpaper by Merenda in the dining room and a serpentine chandelier from Rejuvenation. Doors and trim were removed between the kitchen and dining to create a more functional flow.

The Reveal

This project was an exciting opportunity to take the bones of a home, the clients’ passions, and our own creative sensibilities to create a colorful and bespoke design across many spaces. We were able to give the clients room to grow and collect pieces (which they love to do) in the same way their family and travels have grown. It was an absolute pleasure getting to work together and we’re so proud of the final look!
